Worlds Away

Did You Know?

In 1930, the UBC Women’s Basketball Team traveled to Prague where they won the International Women’s Games.

Facts

  • The UBC Senior A women were the only team representing North America at the 1930 Women’s World Games (originally called the Women’s Olympic Games) in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
  • The final consisted of one game only: North America versus the winning European side. UBC would play France.
  • They won the Women’s World basketball title by a score of 18-14, before a crowd of 10,000 spectators. The low score can be attributed to the fact that the game was played on an outdoor cinder court which was larger than average, in gusty winds, with smaller than average balls and baskets set two feet higher than usual.
  • The game was played under international rules with a non-English speaking referee.
